NCAA questions Gators The NCAA is investigating whether the sports organizer, Dan Calloway, acted on behalf of Michigan State or Georgia when he gave money and gifts to players at Glades Central and other Florida area high schools. The Palm Beach Post reported yesterday that Calloway said he gave gifts to Fred Taylor, Reidel Anthony and Johnny Rutledge, all of whom eventually chose to play at Florida. A source at Florida told the Post that the school's recruiting of the three players is not under investigation. GOFF QUESTIONED NCAA officials questioned outgoing Georgia coach Ray Goff in an investigation of possible recruiting violations. The probe centers on whether Georgia committed major NCAA violations while recruiting in south Florida during the 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1994-95 academic years.
SUTTON REWARED Army Coach Bob Sutton was rewarded with a two-year contract Brentwood senior honored Goalkeeper Henry Ring, a senior at Brentwood High School, made the 1995 National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Umbro High School All-America Soccer Team. Aaron Hayden "People were taking me for granted, like I did something. They looked at me worse than a guy who would fail a drug test," he said. Chargers General Manager Bobby Beathard was willing to take a chance. Hayden started the season on the physically unable-to-perform list and was activated Nov.
10, five days after Means was hurt. "He's a great worker and he's a guy who will push himself," Beathard said. "He's still not back to what he was at Tennessee, but each game he gets better." Said Hayden: "I'm the kind of person I feel like I owe them something." And he gives the coaches something to think about. "Natrone is the man here, it's his job and I respect that," Hayden said. "But as much as I can, I'm going to push whoever's playing." Hayden remained conscious, Hayden said he doesn't remember anything from the time he heard the bones snap until he woke up in the hospital the next day, heavily sedated.
It's probably just as well he blanked it out "It was not very far from being a compound fracture," said Rollo, the first to aid Hayden. "Many times those are. He was rolling around back and forth, and you could see the thing flop from side to side. I had to get a hold of it to keep him from causing it to be compounded." Dr. Kimbro McGuire operated on Hayden in Knoxville, painstakingly realigning the bones and inserting a titanium rod into the tibia, securing it with screws at top and bottom.
Hayden was barely off crutches when he went to the offseason scouting combines, where the only thing he could do was bench press. the street in you that will take you a long ways in life." That attitude has already carried Hayden far from the events of Nov. 26, 1994. The Vols were well on their way to a 65-0 rout at Van-derbilt when Hayden ran a draw play late in the first half. He was being tackled when another Vanderbilt player was blocked across his extended right leg, breaking both of the lower bones, the tibia and fibula.
"I shouldn't have been in there but I was trying to move up on the all-time rushing list," said Hayden, who ended up sixth in the UT record book with 2,061 career yards. "Some people might only be able to afford or want to go to one game a year," said we'd get 10 people to- gether to buy one PSL or if someone wants to attend two games a year or five games he can buy that share of a PSL." DeMontbreun says he is making up a brochure presenting the options club members will have.
